Baby Boy Crib Set

     Right after I found out I was having a little boy, I knew I wanted to go with the "wilderness/forest" theme. On the market you can buy owls and "cute" animal type bedding. After months of pinning things on pintrest, I finally decided to go with the modern print fabric and just do accents in elk, deer, bears, moose and fish. I am so excited to see the rest  come all together. :)

     Bedding I found online I was considering cost around $150.00 and up and I guarantee it is not quality like this set is! When I went to buy fabric I was ASTONISHED when my total bill came to $109.00. That made me a quilt top, quilt back, bumpers, minkee sheet, and crib skirt! :)

   

This crib has been so loved and well used! I am grateful that my brother and sister in law chose to hand their crib down to me. It was a hand made crib that was used for each of my 4 nephews and niece and now has gone through two of my girls and is ready for our son. :) 

      To make the bumpers I purchased this from Joann's with a coupon and spend about 23.00.  My awesome friend, Breisha, helped me measure and cut fabric because right now my pregnant mind can't quite confidently do that. lol! 

       This cute moose is from Scentsy and we collect the scentsy buddies around here. Once I saw this moose, I had to have him!!!! I just took his scarf off. Behind the moose you can see my crooked stitching between the foam pads on the bumper.  That is also how the ties are attatched. 

I chose to do piping for the first time ever! It was not as scary and hard as you might think, it just takes a little patience! :) I LOVE the way it looks! 

I bought fabric on Tuesday and finished this far on Thursday!!! The minkee crib sheet is so soft and stretchy! I am so glad I chose that fabric. 

        This quilt top took me from Friday to Tuesday to finish. I wasn't working on it very fast because I wanted it to be perfect! Each finished square is 3", It was made from 10, 4" squares of each color row. The top row and bottom row are only half and use 5 squares each.  I used the pattern from handmadeisheartmade etsy shop. It was more intimidating than it needed to be. It really wasn't hard at all. Just time consuming. 

    I chose to do a deer applique on the quilt and am so happy I did. It looks like mountains! The deer and navy boarder are in minkee like the sheet and the back of the quilt will be minkee also.  My friend from damselsdaughters on etsy will be doing the quilting for me and I am so excited!!! Everything she does turns out so stinking cute! 

I even had time to make burp rags, and receiving blankets. My burp rags are my absolute favorite!! I LOVE them!!!! you can find the tutorial when you click the "burp rags" right above. 

     The flannel I used for the blankets is stuff I have had for years, thinking maybe someday I'd find a use for them.  They are each different sizes and are only single layer thick because I am having a spring/summer baby. 

I just hemmed each side and tada!!!  

Where did I go?

             Hey everyone! I'm sorry I sorta dropped off the face of the earth for a while.  Shortly after family pictures I found out I was pregnant with baby #3!!!! I spent months and months hugging the toilet and gave up on anything involving energy or effort.  I FINALLY feel ok and now have 3 months to prepare for this little BOY!!! Boy?? I don't have anything in this house for a boy! :) We have done pink, princesses and bows forever! Needless to say, we are all super excited to welcome this little boy into our lives. 

I could never get a cute profile ultrasound, he is a snuggler and would not cooperate! :)

So, I'll let you all in on my plans for the nursery and crib bedding!! I just got fabric yesterday and can't wait to get started!!

             First off, my plan is to keep two walls the same color they are now (tan) and paint the other two grey if I have time and if it looks ok.  I am going with modern fabrics for the crib in grey, toupe, blue, navy and teal/aqua. THEN...... have accents everywhere of ANTLERS, elk, deer, fish, moose, and bears!

               These are the fabrics I chose! I purchased them from my favorite fabric shop ever... handmadeisheartmade on etsy!!!!   My amazing friend from DamselsDaughters on etsy was a HUGE help and I could not have picked out fabrics without her! She has a wonderful eye for putting fabrics together and making BEAUTIFUL creations! She is just starting up her etsy shop and I think everyone should stop by and see her!

This picture above is the fabric for the crib set: multi colored chevron is for the bumper, grey is for the ties, navy minkee (so soft) is for the crib sheet and the teal/aqua is for the bed skirt.

The two above pictures are to show you the chevron quilt I will be making. the teal/aqua will be a boarder all around the quilt. I'm kind of intimidated by the whole process, but i'm determined and i'll keep you all posted. The back will be navy minkee too like the crib sheet!

These fabrics are a few I found to do burp rags with! so cute! 

This picture of a dresser is the idea of I have with my dresser I bought for $25.00 this summer with plans to paint it and refinish it.  I will paint my dresser in the cobalt blue from the fabric and keep the top of it a dark cherry to match the crib. Then for the drawer pulls, I want to cut up an antler and use those! 

I found an antler light switch plate I want to get too! 

I have found a bear rug, deer rug and moose rug! I would LOVE to get one of these too for the floor. SO CUTE!!! 

 

This antler vinyl is a MUST on the wall! 

There are a few other decorations I want to do, but in my time frame, i'll have to see how it goes! So for now, this is my goal! :) 

Projects coming up

I have a huge pile of things accumulating that need to get done for the Holidays! I'm getting so excited! 

              I purchased this fabric from funkaliciousfabrics! The have the most cute knit all in one place that i've ever seen.  This will be our Christmas pajamas this year.  I plan on using PeekaBoo Pattern shop's pattern for pajamas for the girls.  Why did I chose breakfast fabric instead of cute Christmas fabric? well, I feel silly wearing Santa in July. I wear pajamas all year round and if I'm going to invest money in this, I want them to be worn enough to make it worth it and wear out.  :) plus, my husband is known as the Breakfast king in my house.  when he is home he ALWAYS makes breakfast, french toast, waffles, pancakes, breakfast burritos, eggs, bacon.. etc.  The only thing I make better is omelets! :) and that's a RARE occasion. so, it fits us! 

          And for my husband and myself i'll use New Look pattern 6765.  it's my go to pattern every year. it doesn't have a taper leg, it's super comfortable and roomy and like it says, it's easy.  :)  I love that I can sew and make sure I have long enough length for my husband.  His inseam is 38 and it's ALMOST impossible to find jeans for him, let alone pajamas. 

I also got two shirts for my husband and I to go with them:!  I'm super excited this year.  My credit card sure isn't happy about it though.  gulp.  I need to earn some more money fast so I don't feel so guilty. 

Next up Is something i'm super excited about! 

              I purchased these fabrics from xo.gigi fabrics  I love them!!! the picture doesn't give the colors justice! I'm super happy too because I washed some Walmart fabrics at the same time and when I took them out they were ALL tied up together with all those strings.  when I got them all apart, you could tell it was mostly from the Walmart fabrics.  You can always tell when fabric is cut straight because of how little they unravel in the wash.  THANKS GUYS FOR CUTTING SO NICE!  

          With this, I'm making a cute, girly and frilly apron for my daughter's Christmas present to go with her play kitchen she will HOPEFULLY get.  If there is enough left, i'd love one for me.  I know it's super juvenile, but it's fun and pink and girly!!! Who wouldn't want one? :)

        Another thing I need to sew is a stocking for my newest member of the family! I have matching stockings I did a few years ago and I was thinking of doing something like this with it and not putting her name on it.  We still plan on having another baby or two and that way the baby can always use it.  when she grows, I can make a normal one with her name on it.  I don't know how much fabric I have anymore of the matching, but I figure i'll run out soon and be able to do all new ones in a few years anyway.  I just love this idea and it makes me laugh.  :) not even sure where I saw this, but made sure to save a picture.  maybe i'll find it before I post about it.  

I have a friend who asked me to make her some of my famous burp rags.  I say famous because she says it's all over Pinterest.  I had no idea! :) that's pretty cool.  My tutorial for that is found here. 

UPDATE:   I did finish this project, but forgot to take pictures of them. I ended up using fluffier chenille for this because I could not find chenille at Joann's anywhere.  I hope they wash and wear awesome! :) 

         These are in no particular order or anything, but something else I am pretty excited about and something that I feel very honored to be asked to do.  I am making 5 teddy bears out of clothing for a friend.  She tragically lost her son in a car accident about a year ago or so.  I sadly didn't know him, but I feel that he was a very special man who was needed on the other side to help others learn about the gospel.  I have some of his clothes here and I feel a sort of reverence about it that I don't really know how to explain.  I walk by and look at the clothes and feel my heart twinge a little. We hope to have his name embroidered on each of the bears' foot.  I HOPE I have the ability to make these turn out super special and amazing.

        I have never sewn a teddy bear before and I am afraid I won't be able to do it.  The pattern we have chosen to use is McCalls Craft 6135. The cheapest I could find it was on Amazon and still paid $11.00. It's a now out of print pattern. That ALWAYS happens to me! I fall in love with the stuff you can't have anymore.  I must have good taste! :) WISH ME LUCK on this one, I will REALLY need it.  

    With this fabric i'm making a cute tote bag for my daughter to take to her dance class and keep her shoes in it to and from and as she grows a little she can keep her dance skirt etc. in it. 

I purchased this fabric and then was asking myself what I was going to make with it.  I Google-d  ballet tote bag and this one came up.  It's exactly what I wanted to make.  This has instructions  pattern and ballet slippers applique pattern.  Awesome and so cute!!! Not sure how i'll use the fabric exactly, but I will.  funny thing is, on her blog this exact fabric is listed right above the links to her tutorial and things.  

UPDATE: I did not end up making this bag for Christmas, It got insane and I ran out of time. I also wanted to use maybe canvas or find a pink that matched the fabric above for this bag.  I just didn't get to it. also, she doesn't have anything to bring to dance yet. Maybe when she is a little older and has skirts or whatever than she will need it. i'll make it though, someday.. i'm not worried. :)

I also need to make some monkey bum pants in minkee fabric to go with some shirts and things for them.  we are a sweat pants wearing group when we have no where to go and nothing to do.. which is often.  ok.. my daughter changes clothes about 8 times a day and I can't keep an outfit on her, so she is exempt from that statement. :) If you don't remember what monkey bum pants are:

also, this pattern from Sunnu is JUST the pattern piece and the fit is a little more loose and comfy than the previous pattern I guess.  I have not tried it yet.  

I see these ADORABLE outfits by funkey monkey all the time and love them! 

         That's it for now I guess! I gotta go because while I was on here, my daughter dumped a whole brand new box of cereal out all over the living room and was dumping them in and out of her pots and pans.  I know she was playing, but all I see is MESS and $$$$.  I really need a break. 

UPDATE:  I did make some of these, and I think for the baby I prefer the Sunnu"s pattern because there is more room in there for her chubby cute legs! (shown below) I wish the sizes went up higher on them though to make for my 3 year old.  I did make the Terras Treasures one for my 3 year old in minkee and they again are super tight in the legs.  she is skinny too. So, If I make more for her, i'll probably just do a lounge or pajama pant pattern for her. 

more nesting

I keep thinking about the last time I used the bassinet and how much I was frustrated that everything I needed was in different places. Her lotion was in her room, diapers and wipes were in a jjcole box thing on the floor, burp rags were in her room and the changing pad was useless. Because we don't have a nursery set up for her yet (basement still being built) I wanted everything to be accessable when I needed it.

I saw this on etsy for sale and had a light bulb go off! http://www.etsy.com/listing/93623395/giraffe-stripe-and-dot-custom-diaper   Keep in mind that hers is way stinking cute and the fabrics are adorable. I was trying to make this without spending a penny. I used scraps of fabric I had left over. I didn't even have any more fusible fleece, so I used blanket batting and some of those plastic children's placemats. I cut the placemats to the dimensions I wanted and sewed all around them so they couldn't slip around. It adds some stability that otherwise would have been there if I used the right materials in the first place. I lot more work than was needed, but that's just how I roll these days.

 

so mine doesn't look the prettiest, but it's functional like I wanted.

I even made a new sheet for her to match. If you can't tell in the picture, there is yellow and green in the fabrics used. If I was feeling really ambitious and wanted to spend the money, I would have recovered the whole bassinet too, but I didn't. I am really tired these days, grouchy, and want her out NOW!

to secure it to the side of the bed it's self, I used some clip things that were already being used for something useless on the bassinet. This helped so I didn't have to make button holes in the bedding to fit. Also, if I decide to keep the bassinet in a different spot than I planned, it's a piece of cake to move it to the other side or something.

I also made some newborn size bibs today. I want to be done sewing so badly but have one more thing I might do. Other than that... I need a break. sigh.

For the bibs, I just traced a bib I already had, added 1/4" seam allowance around it and used that for a pattern.
